Fort Augustus and Glenmoriston Area

One year car scheme pilot.
2010
Volunteer drivers
required.

We wish to expand the operation of our Lochaber car scheme by piloting a one year service in the Fort Augustus and Glenmoriston area. We will register, recruit and train local volunteers who will provide their own vehicles in order to offer support to members of the community who have difficulty accessing transport, whether due to geographical isolation or health/age related issues.

We are funded by the Fort Augustus and Glenmoriston Community Company and Age Concern and Help the Aged.

In independent evaluations in 2005 and 2008 service users in Lochaber strongly indicated the usefulness of the Lochaber car scheme in maintaining independence whilst volunteers valued contributing to the community, plus the support they received in doing so. We think we can achieve the same with this application.

We believe our car scheme, by providing safe, effective and friendly transport, enables people to maintain health and well being since people can access services, community facilities and connect with friends and family. On average across Highland rural areas only 1 in 4 people are car owners and about 50% of the over 65’s live alone.

We actively encourage the development of social connections.

We charge a small amount for use of the service. Our charges are a minimum fare of £2.00, and a maximum charge of £6.00 for a return journey.

We take a bit of stress off families by supporting their relatives and carers.

In order to deliver a service we need volunteer drivers.

We will pay drivers 40p per mile, plus any other out of pocket expenses.

We may need to limit the number of journeys during the first year if demand is very high. However we are currently investigating other sources of funding to support the pilot throughout 2010 and beyond.

We won’t normally undertake journeys eligible for Patient Transport during this pilot. However, we want to know if you are having difficulty getting Patient Transport so please phone us 0n 01397 700311.
